Math Standards Update!

Math UpdateIt’s that time again…time to check-in on how Washington’s new math standards are shaping up. When we last left the new draft standards, the State Board of Education’s math consultant, Linda Plattner, had assessed the standards and said that they aligned well to her initial recommendations in grades K-8, but that the high school math standards still needed more work.

Math Standards Review, Part II

MathAs you may know, the latest draft of the state’s revised math standards was posted and presented to the legislature on Jan. 31. In their quest to make sure the new standards fit the needs of Washington students, however, the State Board of Education asked Strategic Teaching—the organization that originally offered recommendations on the state’s old standards—to see how well the new standards align with their recommended changes.

Molly Berger: Conversations Make the Conference

Molly BergerI’ve just returned from OSPI’s January Conference, Meeting Diploma Challenges, in Spokane where, despite challenging travel, thousands of teachers gathered. As I walked through the convention center inadvertently picking up on snipits of conversations, I couldn’t help note that, despite the piles of snow just outside the doors and the forecasts of more of the same, the talk was teaching and learning, not weather.

From Spokane, with Love

Terry BergesonI just got back from the OSPI January Conference in Spokane and the WASL rumors are true. In Supt. Terry Bergeson’s keynote address, she broke the news that Washington will receive new WASL tests, which include shorter exams for grades three through eight, faster and more comprehensive results and translation into six different languages.

Gregoire's budget and Bergeson's response

Governor Gregoire released her supplemental budget yesterday for the 2008 session. She proposes only $144 million in new spending with a total increase of $39 million over the 2007-09 budget for K-12 education. According to this press release, Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson doesn't think that's nearly enough since she originally asked for $255 million.

Class of 2008 -- Don't Miss This Deadline!

We all know it’s a busy time of year, so we just wanted to remind everyone of a fast-approaching deadline. This Friday, Dec. 15 is the cutoff for high school seniors graduating in the Class of 2008 to register for the collection of evidence alternative assessment to the WASL.

Kinsley to direct leadership academy

I've worked with Dale Kinsley for about 8 years and have always thought he was one of the best superintendents in WA state. That's why I'm so thrilled that he's been selected as the director of the new Washington State Leadership Academy!
