Washington in the Slow Lane for Race to the Top, according to TNTP

print mail

As states near the mid-point in the public comment period for federal Race to the Top (RTTT) fund requirements, a whole slew of material is being released in regards to the competitiveness—or lack thereof—of certain states in the application process. Though the verdict remains unclear, as expected, it appears that Washington will likely struggle to compete for RTTT funds due to our ban on charter schools, lack of incentives for high-performing teachers and inability to intervene in low-performing schools.

One of the better of these analyses was released last week by The New Teacher Project. To read the complete analysis click on the map above (a hint, Washington isn't one of the "green states.")

Update: KPLU/NPR reports that Washington will need a "rabid dog" to RTTT to be competitive. Yep, its true.
