Science partnership delivers WASL success

Earlier this week we posted a blog on the efforts of Carolyn Landel and the North Cascade and Olympic Science Partnership (NCOSP) at Western Washington University to improve science educaition and achievement in grades 3-10.

Thanks to this work, as well as WWU’s Science, Mathematics and Technology Education program, we were happy to see this report which shows compelling improvement in regional student science learning.

For example, two years ago, only 36 percent of eighth-grade students at Nooksack Valley Middle School in Everson were proficient on the science WASL. In 2007, that number rose to 73 percent in classrooms taught by NCOSP teachers. The statewide gains during that time in non-NCOSP classrooms were much smaller, as the state average rose to only 44 percent. What an incredible achievement!

A big kudos goes to Carolyn and her team at NCOSP for their wonderful contribution to ensuring success for all students in science.
