My Kid Passed Her Sixth Grade WASL. Now What?

print mail
She passed.

That was my first thought as I opened my daughter’s 6th grade WASL scores that finally arrived in the mail last month. I’d been pestering my 13-year-old daughter for a week about when the scores would show up. Jennifer finally rolled her eyes when I asked for the umpteenth time whether she had any WASL scores in her backpack.

“Mom, Noooooo,” she said in a very passable imitation of Dori in “Finding Nemo.”

The Auburn School District, where she attends Cascade Middle School, apparently decided to take the safe route and send them via snail mail with a form letter “signed” by Christine and Terry that congratulated Jennifer on passing the WASL and with the sign off “Jennifer, keep up the good work.”

I had to check the uber mom tendencies in me to pick up the phone and schedule an appointment with the school principal, Dennis Grad, who has probably already put a MFH (mom from hell) notation by my name. She did well, but she didn’t hit the math score out of the park, which is a bit puzzling to me, since math is her favorite subject.

But since I don’t want to be accused of being a helicopter mom, I’ll save all my fussing for next spring, on the 7th grade WASL. Okay, that’s not quite true. Conferences are next week. So guess what I’ll have in my hand as I sit down to talk to her math teacher?
