Magnets and Martinis

That got your attention, I bet.

First, I'm back from vacation, with not a martini (I wish) but a latte in hand here in the gloaming of the afternoon.

This CNN/AP story talks about the trials middle-class parents endure to get their kids into magnet schools in their districts. This one focuses on the LA  School District, and its byzantine system for choosing kids for the limited slots at magnet schools. I often wonder what the lay of the land is like here.

Kent really didn't  have any magnet schools that I was aware of when we were scrambling for a middle school for Jennifer after the private school up and shut down for lack of $$. So we opted for the best middle school we could find, which happened to be on Auburn.

But a friend of mine in the Bellevue School District did have to learn to jump through quite a few hoops to get her son enrolled in a magnet school there.
