Hats off to North Thurston’s “Window to the World of Work!”

Hats Off!

In 8th grade, I’m pretty sure I wanted to be an actress. But as it turned out, when I got a closer look at the profession, I never really could stomach all those late night practices and non-glamorous “movement classes.” So I was happy to see that North Thurston Public Schools are giving their students the same chance and a real “window to the world of work.”

In its 23rd year, yesterday, the “Window to the World of Work” job shadow program paired 87 North Thurston students with 26 businesses to connect what they learn in the classroom to real life and help them with future career planning.

According to the Olympian, “students made and hung signs at Fast Signs, sorted food at the Thurston County Food Bank, washed cars at The Wave Car Wash and toured McChord Air Force Base.”

At South Sound Bank in Lacey, Colton Chabot, 14, and Logan Woodbury, 14, both of Chinook, examined checks for fraud, counted money, toured the vault and worked at the drive-through window. "When you get older and you start a bank account, you already know how it works," Colton said.

Hats off to North Thurston’s teachers and coordinators for allowing students the opportunity to explore their future careers and to the students for making the most of the opportunity!
