Hats off to Clark County WatchD.O.G.S.!

This week we tip our hats to the dads who have joined the WatchD.O.G.S. program in Clark County elementary schools.

Started in Arkansas in 1988, WatchD.OG.S was as a safety initiative after a school shooting, but in Washington’s Clark County it means moms aren’t the only ones helping out in the classroom. More than 135 fathers, stepfathers and uncles at two elementary schools have pledged to become “DOGS” or “dads of great students,” and volunteer for a single school day.

WatchD.O.G.S. volunteer days take many forms, but most local teachers have reported how nice it is to have an extra pair of eyes and hands around the building for lesson periods, recess, tutoring and beyond.

“The children get extra attention, and that makes them feel better about school and themselves,” said 2nd grade teacher Janice Pestana. “We really appreciate our dads.”

Hats off to each dad for giving their time and talent and supporting their kids in school!
