Chat on Becoming a Teacher, and Staying in the Profession

Alas, I will be at a staff retreat tomorrow, but I think this will be an interesting Web chat to tune into.

In this online chat, by Education Week, members of the Teacher Leaders Network will take questions about teaching careers, including negotiating career paths, dealing with hardships and barriers, understanding trends and changes in the profession, and finding the position that's right.

All this, so you won't be one of the 20 percent of the new teachers who quit the profession each year, or 50 percent of the math teachers who do.

This organization also released a new report on teacher pay and compensation that is worth a look.

Here is the Washington Post article that read through the report. The main conclusion of the report was summed up nicely in paragraph three of the article: The report, sponsored by the Hillsborough, N.C.-based Center for Teaching Quality, said teachers should be able to advance through three tiers -- novice, professional and expert -- and schools should stop paying teachers more just because they have more years on the job.

If Anyone Listens In On The Web Chat

E-mail me or give me a call at 253-740-5043. I'd like to here how the conversation went. Of course there will be a transcript later, but I'd like to hear opinions about this chat.
