We blog regularly about the importance of preparing students for college and work, but in no way is it any more important than preparing our youngest learners for school and life. We want young children to get off to a great start in school and life. And with Bette Hyde selected as the new head of the Washington State Department of Early Learning (DEL) by Governor Christine Gregoire, we are confident she has the experience to ensure it happens. Others seem to think so too.
From DEL:
“Her good work in preparing students for kindergarten in Bremerton is a model for others, and I am enthusiastic about the leadership she will bring to the Department of Early Learning on behalf of our state’s youngest citizens,” said William Gates Sr., co-chair of Thrive by Five.
Hyde has years of experience to bring into her new position from time she spent as a special education teacher, school psychologist, principle, and assistant superintendent.
Research shows the first five years of learning as the most productive in a child’s life. Yet despite this, in Washington only 25 percent of the lowest income students are ready for Kindergarten. Hyde has some very important work to do. It’s crucial we continue to improve early education so Washington’s youngest learners are off to a successful start in school and life. And it’s reassuring Hyde has the experience and reputation to work toward making this happen.
